Our Mission

IBARS’ mission is to encourage, promote and support basic and applied research in the field of surgery.
Our purpose remains relevant today with the ever changing and increasingly challenging landscape of medical research, both locally and globally.

I began a formal liver transplant program at the University of Minnesota on July 2, 1968 (a year after I became chairman). Initially, our results were disappointing. But the program progressed, and by 1983, we were recording a patient survival rate of 20% at 3 years post transplant. By 1993, we were able to achieve a patient survival rate of 60% at 3 years post transplant, and finally by 2003, a patient survival rate of over 80%.
